She made a cruise around the globe and participated in combat activities during the 1991 Persian Gulf War. ![]() The Navy brought her out of mothballs in May 1986. After that conflict ceased, she made several cruises to Europe before the authorities decommissioned her in February 1955. She made two combat tours in Korean waters. USS Missouri was the only active battleship at the breakout of the Korean War in June 1950. In January 1950, she sustained minor damage during a major grounding incident off the Virginia coast. She continued service throughout the 1940s in and around the Atlantic waters. It was on her deck that the Japanese formally surrendered on September 2, 1945. She arrived in time to help with the invasion of Iwo Jima, the campaign in the Ryukyus, and operations in the Japanese home islands. After completing shakedown and training cruises in the Atlantic for the first few months, she reported to the Pacific in November of that year. The United States Navy brought USS Missouri into service with her commission in June 1944.
